Prologue: The Refusal of the Muse<\/strong>

I will not call upon a muse,
nor beg a god for flame;
I’ll ask the ledger and the light
and every honest name.

This is a song about a debt:
that all things have a source,
that nothing climbs out of the dark
without a cause or force;

and of its twin, the harder claim:
that emptiness is blind:
no void will ever find the lost;
somebody has to find.

So here’s a ballad, plainly made
for one who checked my sums:
of physics, grief, and lies that run,
and how the true thing comes.

Come, bring a lamp, and leave the spells,
a pencil, not a wand;
the dark is only light withheld,
and light is close at hand.

I. The Ledger

A brewer’s son in Salford hung
a weight above a vat;
it fell, it turned a paddle wheel,
and warmth came out of that.

The warming was a sliver’s width
on glass of finest grade,
but what the falling weight had lost
the water had repaid.

So heat is work, and work is heat,
and neither comes for free;
the sum is kept through every change
by stern economy.

Yet dreamers drew their endless wheels
and sold them by the score,
till Paris wearied of the lot
and shut the learned door.

Then Emmy Noether, unpaid, barred
from the lecturer’s chair,
took Hilbert’s puzzle, turned it round,
and found the reason there:

She proved that every symmetry
the laws of nature hold
secures a number that remains
however things unfold.

The same tomorrow as today?
Then energy holds true.
The same in Kent as Samarkand?
Then momentum holds, too.

The Reich dismissed her, thirty-three;
she crossed the ocean wide.
No statute can repeal a proof.
The theorem has not died.

So when a salesman, smooth with charm,
proves motors need no fuel,
ask only: whence the energy?
The books are strict, not cruel.

II. The Null and the Seething

In eighteen eighty-seven, two
men set a mirrored stone
to swim in pools of quicksilver
and catch the wind unknown.

They turned the stone and watched the light
for any shift or sway,
and found no difference at all
by night, by noon, by day.

No aether found: a null result;
yet nothing, honestly seen,
undid the furniture of space
and let the new thing in.

But emptiness is not the blank
the ancients thought they saw;
the vacuum trembles with the fields
that underwrite the law.

Two golden plates, set close, are pressed
by that unquiet sea,
and Casimir’s small, honest push
is there for all to see.

And those who sell you zero-point
to run the house for free
forget that ground is ground: the floor
of all that there can be.

You cannot drain the lowest state:
there’s nowhere lower still.
The hum is real, and mapped, and true;
it will not turn your mill.

So hold both truths: the void is rich,
and none of it is spare;
the wonder and the warning grow
from the same root, laid bare.

III. The Pigeons and the Pulse

At Holmdel in New Jersey, two
men with a giant horn
heard hiss from every part of sky
by midnight and by morn.

They scraped the pigeons’ leavings out,
they checked each rivet’s seam,
and only when the humble failed
did they allow the dream.

It was the oldest light there is,
set loose when atoms formed,
and stretched through fourteen billion years
until it barely warmed.

At Cambridge, sixty-seven, Bell,
a student, saw a trace
upon a mile of paper chart
that ticked with metred grace.

They joked of Little Green Men, but
they would not shout it loud;
they sought for more, and found a flock:
no beacons from a crowd.

They were the ash of burnt-out suns,
collapsed, and spun, and lit,
a lighthouse swept across the dark
with no one tending it.

And is the world the lesser thing
for having been explained?
The dead star turning in its night
outshines what we had feigned.

IV. The Long Library

Eratosthenes took a stick,
a well, a camel’s pace,
and from the angle of a shadow
he measured Earth’s round face.

He came astonishingly close
with sun, and step, and stone;
two thousand years before a probe
could check what he had shown.

The scholars of the ages after
knew well the Earth was round;
the myth that they believed it flat
is, in itself, unsound.

We tell of one great fire that took
Alexandria’s shelves,
but loss is mostly slow neglect,
a thing we do ourselves.

In Cairo, near the year one thousand,
Ibn al-Haytham sealed a room,
and through one hole the world came in,
inverted, through the gloom.

He wrote: the seeker should not trust
the sages, nor his own
first thought; but doubt, and test, and weigh,
and let the proof be known.

And hardest is the final clause:
to doubt the thing you hold
most dear, the theory of your youth,
and test it, and be told.

V. The Swifter Wing

A lie takes wing; the truth, on foot,
comes limping from behind;
so Swift observed, though now the line
is Twain’s, in many a mind.

Which proves the point, and proves it twice:
the wrong name flew, and caught;
the checking takes an afternoon,
the sharing, not a thought.

In Vienna, eighteen forty-seven,
Semmelweis made it clear:
the hands that came from corpse to bed
had brought the fever near.

He had them wash in chlorine, and
the deaths fell, week on week;
but pride is stung by being proved
a hazard to the weak.

Dismissed, he raged, was locked away,
and died in ‘sixty-five
of sepsis from a wound: the foe
he’d taught us to survive.

The truth was patient, being true:
Pasteur, then Lister, came,
and every surgeon scrubs today
and half-recalls his name.

And Piltdown Man, so proudly ours,
a jaw, a skull, a lie,
stood forty years upon the shelf
till fluorine told us why.

A wish is half the forger’s work:
the rest is done by those
who hear the thing they hoped to hear
and never ask who knows.

Now every pocket holds a press
that never sleeps or tires,
and feeds on anger, haste, and fear,
and fans them into fires.

The cost is never abstract: fear
dressed as a study; then
the children who’d have been quite safe
are in the wards again.

There is no spell to stop a lie
that’s learned to wear a coat;
the cure is slower: show your work,
and mark each thing you wrote.

VI. The Hollow Atom

At Manchester, a student fired
bright alphas at thin gold;
most sailed straight through, as theory said,
but a few came back, we’re told.

The chief declared it quite as strange
as if a naval shell
had bounced from tissue paper, and
come hurtling back pell-mell.

So every atom is a pea
in the middle of a town;
how then can any table hold
a cup, and not fall down?

It holds, because the fields push back,
and fermions will not share
one state; the emptiness is law,
and law is what is there.

And Cavendish, in ‘ninety-eight,
a shy man in a shed,
hung lead on lead from slender wire
and weighed the world instead.

We have been wrong: phlogiston, aether,
caloric, and the rest;
and every error, when it fell,
was felled by a finer test.

That is no weakness. It’s the point:
a craft that hunts the flaw,
and having found it, says so, loud,
and writes anew the law.

VII. Nature Cannot Be Briefed

In January, ‘eighty-six,
the engineers had warned
that seals would stiffen in the cold;
Challenger flew. We mourned.

Then Feynman, with a clamp, a glass
of water full of ice,
made rubber lose its spring
before them in a trice.

His note was plain, and has not aged:
the facts must lead, not trail;
for nature cannot be deceived
and spin will always fail.

That April, by Pripyat, a core
carried a flaw, unnamed:
its boiling coolant, turned to void,
fed what it should have tamed.

A near-miss, years before, was filed
and stamped, and locked away;
the men who met it were not told
what any page could say.

The state kept silent. But the wind
bore ash across the sea,
and gauges rang in Sweden, and
the truth, at last, was free.

A lie is a loan the future signs;
and truth will call it in,
with interest, and a patient hand;
and nature, too, will win.

VIII. The Empty Chair

Houdini, when his mother died,
the man no chain could hold,
went sitting with the mediums
for comfort, as of old.

He wanted it to be real. He knew
each trick, for they were his;
and still the grieving child in him
held out for one that is.

He found the cracking toe-joints, and
the trumpets on their strings,
the cheesecloth of the ectoplasm,
and all such sorry things.

His friend, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle,
had lost a son to flu,
and wanted so to find him that
he thought the fairies true.

He left a pact with Bess, a code
which, if the dead could write,
he’d send. Ten Halloweens she kept,
then snuffed the candle-light.

I know that wish. I have it still:
a kitchen, late, and bare,
the kettle’s click, a chair pulled out,
and no one sitting there.

I will not hire a stranger’s mouth
to say the things you’d say;
you’d see the trick inside a minute,
and laugh it all away.

IX. What the Ledger Keeps

What does the ledger keep of you?
I will not lie to me:
no voice, no warmth, no thought that thinks,
no pattern left to see.

The atoms that you wore were forged
in stars that died before
the Sun was lit; and now they pass
to leaf, and wind, and shore.

And light that left your face one day
in summer, in the park,
is out among the nearer stars,
still travelling through the dark.

No void can find what once has been
and take it from the page:
the fact that you were here is fixed
for every coming age.

That is no comfort, and no claim
that you are lingering near;
it is a fact, and facts are things
I can lean on, down here.

The law that breaks the cup, and will
not mend its shards again,
is why I have a past to hold,
and why I hold the pain.

X. The Plain-Lit Halls

There is a kind of peace that’s built
by looking, not away;
you set down what was done, and who,
in the plain light of day.

The other peace is cheap: a hush,
a rug on a rotten floor;
it holds until the first hard rain
and fails as it did before.

In South Africa, in plain-lit halls,
a nation heard its past:
the guilty speaking, plainly, to
the families, at last.

It was not perfect: some went free
that justice might have caught,
and some who spoke got nothing back;
but still, the truth was sought.

In Argentina, students learned
to read a buried bone,
and dug where thousands had been vanished
and brought their names back home.

In Ireland, too, the vanished lay
in bog, and field, and shore;
the void gives no one back. It took
a spade, and years, and more.

You cannot forgive what you’ve not seen,
nor mourn what is not named;
and peace is not forgetting, but
remembering, unashamed.

And in the smaller wars at home,
where brothers, sisters part,
the same arithmetic applies:
say what happened; then start.

XI. The Charge

Ask first what would change your mind;
if nothing could, beware;
a claim that no result can touch
is not a claim, but air.

Ask next: what pays for it? What turns
the wheel? Where does it start?
A tale with nothing under it
is either ghost, or art.

Ask third: who tried to break it? How?
How hard, and with what skill?
Be wary of the praised, untested:
let doubters have their fill.

But keep your edge for what is claimed,
and kindness for the claimer;
most people passing on a lie
are frightened, not its framer.

Contempt has never changed a mind;
it only bars the door;
a bridge is made of patience, and
one fact, and then one more.

And you can be fooled. The cleverest
are not exempt: the more
a mind can reason, the better it can
defend what it chose before.

So when you’re wrong, and you will be,
say so, and say it plain;
each change of mind, made openly,
makes truth less hard to gain.

XII. The Budget of the Sun

The Sun is not a gift. It spends
four million tonnes a second,
and all that lives is living off
the budget it has reckoned.

And life is order, bought with heat
sent outward to the dark:
a leaf, a cell, a mind, a home,
a small and local spark.

And love is order too: two lives
held steady, year by year,
and paid for in the plainest coin:
attention, and being here.

No spell could give me what I had;
it was not conjured, but made
by every day of ordinary work,
and so is not mislaid.

Some day, long past all human count,
the last star will be spent;
till then the Sun is lent to us,
and we to each other, lent.

So this is what I have to give,
and all I’d ask of you:
that nothing’s made of nothing, and
that what is true is true;

that wishing never turned a wheel
or called a wave to shore;
that someone must go out and look,
and look, and look some more;

that what is false can be unpicked
with patience, and with care;
that what is true was always so,
and waits, and will be there;

that those we love, though gone, are not
unmade, and not undone:
the fact of them is in the world
as firm as any sun;

that those who err are not our foes
but kin; that they, too, grieve;
that many a lie is only fear,
and fear can be relieved.

For everything that is was made
of something, long ago;
and what is lost is lost somewhere,
and we are those who go

to look, with lamp and pencil, and
with doubt, and open hands.

The rest is ours. It stands.
